How long have you been a member of FSA (years)? I have been a member of FSA for 12 years.
Have you served FSA in the past? I have served on three committees over the past seven years, including the Conference Committee, Membership Committee, and Education Committee. For the past four years I have served as a Board of Directors Member, and for the past three years I have served as the Chair of the Education Committee and member of the FSA Educational Foundation.
What abilities and attributes can you bring to the Board? As an Orlando-based stormwater professional, an advocate for water resource stewardship, and a lifelong Floridian, I will bring energy, passion, and a wealth of technical and practical knowledge to the FSA Board. As a current Board of Directors member, Educational Foundation member, and Education Committee Chair, I have been engaged in multiple FSA priorities including modernizing the Level I and Level II Stormwater Operators Manual, developing the BMP Life-Cycle Costing Tool, and other research efforts that have identified FSA as the state’s preeminent stormwater organization. As Chair of the Education Committee, I have prioritized educational offerings that address the Statewide Stormwater Rule and emerging stormwater management technologies and workflows, including the successful recent “AI in Action for Stormwater Management” webinar. If re-elected, I will continue pursuing these and other FSA priorities.
My experience in other professional society leadership positions has shown me that effective leadership drives positive change for organizations and the communities they serve. While serving as chair of ASCE’s Environmental Water Resource Institute’s East Central Branch in 2016 and 2019, I oversaw successful fundraising years and membership growth; coordinated dozens of events to raise awareness of water resource issues; provided low-cost continuing education to environmental and engineering professionals; organized community service events; and raised coveted scholarships for aspiring students. In my 2016 chairmanship year, our small, Orlando-based EWRI branch won the national award for most Outstanding Institute Chapter. I am always engaged in finding ways to scale this success for FSA, where active engagement through dedicated leaders and members will benefit our industry in serving the public and protecting our state’s most important resource.
What background and experience do you have in the stormwater industry? I have 23 years of professional civil and water resources engineering consulting experience on projects across Florida, as well as being a researcher and educator. I received my bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from UCF in 2005 and my master’s degree in civil/water resources engineering from UCF in 2014. During my master’s program, I studied at UCF’s Stormwater Management Academy, where I conducted research on the effectiveness of stormwater best management practices and the impacts of climate change on rainfall patterns throughout the United States. I also worked as an adjunct instructor at UCF, where I taught water resources design to upper-level engineering students. My technical passion is in stormwater management and helping my clients, other educators, and policymakers better understand the interaction between the developed and natural world through innovative, proactive management of water resources that protect Floridians and natural systems. I have led research on stormwater BMPs in academia, as well as in professional consulting, including how nature-based solutions can be successful within Florida to improve water quality and how autonomous real-time stormwater control systems can be protective of the environment while reducing flood risk within our interconnected urban stormwater system. I have primarily served Florida municipalities and counties throughout the state addressing numerous water challenges from flood control and sea level rise to water quality impairments. In my current work, I am using high performance computing to build stormwater flood models that are highly efficient, detailed, and flexible, and which allow local governments to identify and rapidly implement flood reduction strategies.
Why do you want this Board position? Because I want to serve with a group of professionals whose values and mission match my own to advocate for greater awareness of and lead the nation in the best practices in stormwater management.
